Anti-Slip Garage Floors

One of the most significant concerns about epoxy flooring for the garage is how slippery it can be when wet and what can be done regarding an additive to create an anti-slip surface.

Because resinous garage floor coatings such as epoxy, polyurethane, and polyurea are non-porous, the surface created can be a very smooth, glass-like finish. While this type of surface is ideal when dry, it can become slippery with the introduction of mud, water, snow, or oils from your car.

Here are 3 items to consider when deciding whether or not you should use a non-skid additive to your epoxy garage flooring.

1. Where you live:

One of the things to consider is the climate in which you live when deciding whether you need a non-slip additive for your epoxy garage floor coating, or not. If you live in an area with a cold climate and a lot of snow, you will tend to have a lot of water on your floors due to snow melting off the cars. If this is the case, then an anti-slip floor is worth considering. Snow and ice are not the right mix when it comes to epoxy coated garage floors. If you live in a dryer part of the country, it may not be worth considering.

2. How you plan to use your floor:

Another thing you need to consider is how you plan on using the floor. If you are using it for projects that involve fluid spills such as anti-freeze, oils, or other chemicals that can create a slip & fall hazard. An anti-slip additive would help in this situation.

3. The type of floor coating that you choose:

The kind of surface that you install on your floor will be a factor as well. If you select a floor with some mixed media elements to it, such as quartz, or paint chips, this can create some traction and grip on the floor, due to its slightly irregular texture. If you don't use these items, the floor will be very smooth and is most conducive to becoming slippery when wet.
